How I Got ChatGPT to Stop Interrupting During Voice Conversations (And How You Can Too)

When I first tried out ChatGPT in voice mode, it blew my mind. But after using it for a while, I found myself sometimes getting annoyed with it. Especially when I pause mid-thought and it jumps in before I’m done speaking.

Sound familiar?

I stumbled onto a solution that actually works. Now, when using the advanced voice mode, ChatGPT acknowledges me without breaking my flow. Here’s how you can do the same.

Step 1: Open ChatGPT Settings

In the bottom left corner of the screen, click on your name, then click on “Settings.”

Step 2: Personalize Your Conversations

Once you’re in settings, click on “Personalization,” then click “Customize ChatGPT.”

Step 3: Add the Custom Prompt

Under the section that asks, “How would you like ChatGPT to respond?” paste this prompt below.

Prompt:

“In voice conversations, I want you to acknowledge what I say simply by responding ‘mhm,’ and nothing more, until I explicitly call on you and say, ‘ChatGPT’.”

This will make ChatGPT wait for you to prompt it before giving a full response. Of course, you have to remember to explicitly say “ChatGPT…” when you require a response. Alternatively, you can also give ChatGPT any name you want.

Step 4: Save and Enjoy

Hit save, and you’re all set. Now, during voice conversations, ChatGPT will simply acknowledge with a “mhm” and wait until you call on it, giving you control of the flow.

This simple tweak made my interactions with ChatGPT much smoother. WIN!

However, one other thing I should point out is that while ChatGPT allows users to customize their experience through personalization settings, there are limitations. Currently, it seems that you can only have one custom personalization set at a time, meaning you need to be strategic about what instructions or preferences you input.

If you want to add multiple preferences, you may be able to combine them into a single prompt to cover different aspects of the interaction. Results may vary… Sooo experiment to see what works for you!

Hope this helps!
